Mountain Pine Ridge

Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve was established in 1944 with its main purpose to protect wildlife and our pine forest. On this trip we’ll be visiting the Rio Frio cave, Rio On pools and the waterfall of Big Rock.Rio Frio cave is approximately 33 miles of unpaved bumpy road, 52 kilometers, which is about 1 hour 20 minutes’ drive from San Ignacio. This cave, with its enormous 65 feet tall arched opening, will amaze you with its giant stalactites that hang from the cave’s roof like elegant stone chandeliers. On our way back, we will be stopping at the scenic Rio On pools where lunch will be served. After lunch you will have time to either just relax enjoying the majestic scenery or you can have a grand time splashing in the cool and refreshing waters of the naturally formed swimming pools fed by dramatic waterfalls hidden within the forest of evergreen trees. Our last stop will be Big Rock Falls, a waterfall that was carved from some of our region’s oldest rocks. This 150 feet waterfall gem, with a pool at its base, makes it one of the best picturesque falls in our country. Join us in taking a dive or just relax enjoying its beauty.
