Caracol

Caracol – a Spanish word for Snail, is located approximately 55 miles, 88 kilometers, from San Ignacio, in the Vaca Plateau which is part of the greater Chiquibul Forest Reserve. Caracol is the largest known Maya site in Belize. The tallest structure, Caana, rises 137 feet above plaza level. Special features at this site include buildings which served as astronomical observatory. Caracol’s Ruler, Lord Water, defeated Tikal’s ruler, Double Bird, on 562 A.D. This defeat is reflected on inscriptions on Altar 21 at Caracol and Stela 31 at Tikal.
