Xunantunich is a Maya word that translated to English means “Stone Lady” or “Maiden of the Rock”. This Maya site is located 7 miles from San Ignacio, passing through the village of San Jose Succotz whereby you will have to cross the Mopan River on a hand cranked ferry, then continue the journey for another mile to the majestic site. The largest pyramid “El Castillo” rises 130 feet above plaza level, making it the second tallest Maya temple in Belize. This temple is famous for its large amazing Stucco Frieze.
